• Crown (cap) - all metal, porcelain to metal or most commonly all porcelain (ceramic,
  non-metal) restoration that covers the whole tooth, which protects the tooth from
  possible breaking, or loss of the tooth.
• Bridge - Like a crown, this restoration can be all metal, porcelain to metal or all porcelain.
  A bridge is a fixed or cemented prosthesis, which replaces missing teeth.

With the help of a periapical x-ray, the doctor can detect an abscess at the end of the root of the tooth.
 
So what is Root Canal Therapy? Root Canal Therapy is actually removing infected pulp (nerve/blood supply) from the root of a tooth; cleaning out the canals, which house the nerves; and sealing the tooth with a synthetic rubber material.
 
Although a filling can be done after a root canal, most doctors highly recommend having a crown placed because the tooth can become brittle after the nerve is removed.
